Companion Animals

The Companion Animals Act was introduced by the NSW Government in 1998 to protect pets, their owners and the broader community.

In NSW, Around 80,000 dogs and cats are lost, hurt or stolen each year. Most are impounded and are not able to identified. Because they cannot be reunited with their owners, they may be destroyed.

With increasing urbanisation, tension between different interest groups in the community has increased, necessitating a new approach to the management of companion animals.
